Before the invention of color photography there was hand-tinting also known as hand-coloring.Hand-tinting is the antiques art of enhancing black and white photographs with color.
What is the process?
Each piece begins in the darkroom with a vision and my own silver gelatin negatives. After making a custom print on fine art photographic paper, the print is selenium toned and dried. The process continues with layering photo oils and dyes and is finished by sharpening details using fine brushes and soft lead pencils. This is the same method used to preserve and color photographs from the early 20th century.
Do you use a computer or photoshop?
No - all original artwork is done by hand – from the dark room to the final product.
How long does it take to make a hand-tinted print?
It depends on the size of the print and number of colors needed. Usually there are one to two days spent in the dark room. From there some pieces take as little as one day to complete - others up to a week.
